introduction
Students from 1st class to tenth class know what they learn in each subject. They know they deal with numbers in maths, with alphabets in English etc.
Intermediate students have basic knowledge of subjects they deal in their 2-year study curriculum.
Undergraduates consciously opt the subjects with some amount of knowledge.
Postgraduates select the subject of their interest with an intension to widen their knowledge. Hence it is obvious that they start with strong hold over the subject.
However, research scholars irrespective of the subject concerned are all awarded same degree i.e Doctor of Philosophy not necessarily having the basic knowledge of the subject Philosophy.
How many research scholars try to understand the background of philosophy before joining Ph.D, while doing Ph.D or at least after completion of Ph.D.
No NET/SET and Prephd check this. Not a single question on philosophy.
What is the role of philosophy in research? How significantly it should be presented in research analysis and findings? Why not there is at least one paper on philosophy in Ph.D course structure.
One paragraph or one page evaluation of concepts involved in research topic does not justify the philosophical significance of the research topic. Philosophy should be the undercurrent throughout the research process.
However, this opinion is purely personal.
All said and done research scholars doing research in subjects other than Philosophy should know why the highest degree is awarded in the name of the subject philosophy. How was it decided?
